Dosa | Plain Dosa | How to make Dosa?



Dosa is a fermented crepe made from rice batter and black lentils (or Urad Daal). It is a staple dish of South Indian and also popular in other parts of India, and other countries like Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Myanmar, Nepal, Bangladesh,Malaysia and Singapore.

It is like a crispy and thin pancake which taste as delicious as possible.
         
Batter Preparation Time : 16 Hours
Dosa Preparation Time: 15 Minutes                
Cooking Time: 45 Minutes
Serves: 6-8 Servings

               

INGREDIENTS


  • 1/2 Cup(250 Gm) Urad Dal (Split black lentils)
  • 1/2 Tablespoon Fenugreek Seeds(Methi)
  • 2 cups Idli Rice. (A typical small rice,general raw rice can also be used if Idly rice not available)


Batter Preparation:

Mix fenugreek seeds with Urad dal in a big bowl , put enough water and soak it for 2-3 hours
Wash Rice properly , and then take rice in another vessel and soak it in enough water for 2-3 hours
Drain the Urad dal and fenugreek mix and grind in mixture by putting 1 cup water.
Put this grinded mixture in a vessel.
Similarly drain the rice and grind it in the mixture by adding 1 cup water.
And put the blended rice in the same bowl where Urad and Fenugreek grinded mix was kept.
Add salt(as per taste) and mix everything well.
Cover the vessel with a lid(Dhakkan/plate) and leave it overnight(or 12 hours) for fermentation.
And the batter is ready.

In most of the southern Indian cities , you can find ready made Dosa batter.
Those who Don't want to spend effort and time in making batter can go for it.

DIRECTIONS

  1. Heat a non-stick tava (griddle), sprinkle a little water on the tava (griddle) and wipe it off gently using a cloth. Pour a bowl or ladleful of the batter on it and spread it in a circular motion to make a thin circle.
  2. You can take a small bowl with flat bottom and use its bottom surface to spread the dosa.     The diameter can depend on size of the griddle(tava). 10 Inches is ideal for home cooking. Resturant have bigger tawa where 20 Inches Dosa can be easily made.
  3. Sprinkle some Oil/ghee on the top of dosa(top white side which is not cooked), and put some oil on the edges and cook on a high flame till the Dosa becomes brown and crisp from one side.
  4. You can gently wipe out dosa from griddle and make a any shape as per your choice.     Rolling, Triangle, Semicircle.
  5. You can repeat this process to make more dosa. You can make almost 15 dosa with this mixture.

      Dosa can be served along with Sambhar , Coconut Chutney or Tomato Chutney
